Want a productive summer? Want to be a better version of yourself when fall arrives? If so, you’re at the right place.
While summer doesn’t officially start until June 20th, for all practical purposes, it’s here now. School is out. Schedules have shifted for students and their parents. As we begin Summer ’26, my question is simple: What will you do with it?
All year long, we tell ourselves, “When things slow down, I’ll finally…” and then we fill in the blank. Get in shape. Read more. Start that project. Be more present with the people we love.
For most of us, summer is the biggest block of free time we’ll get all year. And yet, if history is any guide, it slips away before we know what happened.
Truth be told, if you wait until later to decide what you want from this summer, “later” won’t show up. You’ll blink, and the calendar will already say “September.”
We’re Great at Dreaming
Most of us are strong when it comes to big ideas. We can picture the mountaintop. What trips us up is finding the path to get there.
Let’s say your goal is to “get in shape” this summer. Great goal. Now what?
“I’ll join a gym,” you say.
Okay, but which one? Do you even know what’s available near you? Here’s a simple challenge: Put the world on pause for five minutes. Use those five minutes to search for gyms in your area. Then, spend another five minutes reading reviews. After that, call or text someone you know who actually goes to a gym. Ask where they go and what they like about it. That’s one short conversation.
Want to visit your top two choices? Pick a day and go.
Want to “read more”? What are you going to read? Spend five minutes on a Google search for top selections in your areas of interest. Call a friend who is an avid reader and ask for suggestions. Do you prefer a physical book or a digital one? Get your library card or online subscription in order.
In about 15 minutes of focused attention, you go from a vague goal to an actual plan. That’s not magic. That’s focus.
The Real Problem Isn’t Time
We don’t suffer from a lack of time. We suffer from a lack of focus. When we slow down long enough to define what success looks like, it’s surprising how quickly the dots connect between where we are and where we could be.
Think about how you want to be different when summer ends. Better health? A finished project? More time with your family? More confidence in a new skill? Whatever it is, name it. Write it down. That one step separates people who achieve their goals from people who merely talk a big game.
A Simple Plan That Works
Once you’ve named your goal, break it into steps. Put those steps in order. Assign a date to each one. Then, put the plan where you’ll see it. It could be tasks in a digital task manager or in a paper planner. It could even be a sticky note on the mirror. What’s important is that you see it routinely.
The end of summer will come, ready or not. Either you’ll look back and say, “I made that time count,” or you’ll wish you had. That choice is yours to make right now … before summer starts to slip away.
What’s your goal for this summer? If you don’t know, you can’t make it happen. You’ve got decisions to make and actions to take. If you make those decisions and take those actions, Summer ’26 could be the summer to remember.
What’s your goal for this summer? What can you do today that’s going to jumpstart something of significance? It doesn’t have to be something big. It just has to be something doable.
