Have you ever wished you could just talk to your computer and have it type for you?

Well, you can, and you’ve probably been overlooking the easiest way to do it.

Today, I’m showing you Windows + H, the built-in voice typing feature that’s hiding in plain sight on your Windows PC. There’s nothing to download. There are no subscriptions involved. And it’s easy. Let’s dive in.

What Is Windows + H?

Windows + H is a keyboard shortcut that activates Windows Voice Typing. When you press Windows + H, a small microphone icon appears on your screen. Whatever you say gets transcribed in real-time into whatever text field you’re currently in.

The best part? It works everywhere. Use it in your browser, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Notepad, email clients, or Evernote, just to name a few. If you can type in it, you can speak into it. When you’re done, just say “stop listening” and the microphone turns off. You can also hit any key to stop the dictation.

How Voice Typing Works in Practice

Let me show you the most common use case: an email. I’m going to compose a quick email to my colleague. I hold down the Windows key, press H, and speak the text. Notice how I said “comma,” “period,” and “question mark” out loud? The system recognizes punctuation commands. You can also say “new line” for a single line break or “new paragraph” for a double space.

Using Voice Typing for Longer Documents

What if you need to write a longer document? Maybe a report, a blog post, or meeting notes? Voice typing shines here because you can get your thoughts out way faster than typing.

You can use Windows + H anywhere you would normally type. You can compose a social media post, for example. One of my favorite uses is composing AI prompts. We’ve been used to Google searches for decades. Typing in a few words is no big deal. But keying in a longer prompt, one with enough specificity to give you the results you want? Now that can take a bit longer. Being able to speak the prompt rather than type it is a huge time saver.

Five Tips for Getting the Most Out of Voice Typing

Here are my top tips for maximizing your results:

One: Speak naturally, but clearly. You don’t need to talk like a robot, but enunciate.

Two: Learn the punctuation commands. Period, comma, question mark, exclamation point. These become second nature fast.

Three: Use a decent microphone. Your laptop’s built-in mic works, but a USB microphone or headset gives much better accuracy.

Four: Edit as you go for short texts, or do a full voice draft and edit later for longer documents. Find what works for you.

Five: Remember, “stop listening” ends the session. Don’t leave it running in the background.
