If you use the pro version of Remember The Milk and use subtasks, this post will save you serious time.

In my last post, we looked closely at projects and next steps. [Placeholder: Link to previous episode on projects and next steps]. If you view my Remember The Milk account, you can spot the projects easily. Projects look like statements with a noun upfront. You will also see a small number to the right of the project. That number shows how many subtasks or next steps you have left to finish.

Single actions are also easy to spot. These tasks start with verbs. One action completes them, and you can check them off right away.

Finally, you can see the subtasks. They also start with a verb, and they show an upward-pointing arrow. If you click that arrow, you view the entire project. You see what the project looks like when done, the remaining subtasks, and reference info. You can also click to see completed subtasks.

In that last video, we talked about a vital concept. In Remember The Milk, a task and its subtasks never appear in the same list. If a parent task and its subtasks are due today, only the parent task appears on your today list. Clicking the task reveals the subtasks. If this concept is new to you, I suggest watching that video first.

This layout means there is a unique relationship between dates for tasks and subtasks. Say you want to postpone a task that has subtasks. You want to postpone the main task by two weeks, and you want to postpone the subtasks by that same amount.

Right now, this takes at least two steps. You click to open the task and view the subtasks. You check the box to select all subtasks, press the P key for the postpone shortcut, and type the number of days. When you press enter, the system postpones the subtasks. Then you must click the due date for the parent task, press P, and type the number to postpone the main task.

That is not a mountain of work for one project. But suppose you have a dozen tasks with subtasks that you want to delay by two weeks. You have to change them one by one.

This post introduces a MilkScript that makes it easy to postpone Remember The Milk tasks and subtasks all at once. After you install the script, you can select as many tasks as you like. Click the MilkScript icon, choose the script, and enter the number of days. Remember The Milk postpones those tasks and the related subtasks by that exact number.

If you are on a pro plan, you can get the script and install it right now.

To add this MilkScript to your account, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the MilkScript icon in the top right.
  2. Click “New…”
  3. Paste the code into the editor.
  4. Name the script at the top.
  5. Click on “Input Parameters” at the bottom.
  6. Add the number of days to postpone.

Now, all selected tasks and their subtasks will shift by that number of days.

Special thanks go to Emily from the Remember The Milk team for writing this script. I reached out to the team to ask if this feature was possible, and Emily wrote it for us. She noted that she is not a professional developer, but she vibe-coded the script and tested it thoroughly.

Subtasks are incredibly handy. This script makes managing them much easier.
