I never set out to create a video that would reach a million views. This one, in my mind, was no better or worse than countless others I had made. But then something happened.

The Surprising Reality of Viral Content

When people ask me about my “secret sauce” for viral success, I have to disappoint them. I don’t have a magic formula. My million-view video looked just like my other content: simple production, straightforward topic, and no extraordinary marketing.

Here’s the video we’re talking about:

The Slow Burn of Unexpected Success

My video’s journey was anything but instant:

  • First year: 5,000 views
  • Second year: 27,000 views total
  • Third year: 75,000 views total
  • Fourth year: Over 1 million views

The breakthrough came in mid-October 2023, when the YouTube algorithm suddenly began recommending the video to a specific audience—high school and college students in India looking for effective study techniques.

Key Lessons for Content Creators

1. Just Start Creating

Don’t wait for perfection. My content journey took years:

  • 2005: Started blogging
  • 2017: Launched podcasts
  • 2019: Began making videos

The most important step? Hitting “publish” on that first piece of content. It won’t be perfect. In fact, it will probably be the worst one you ever do. Get that one out of the way, and everything is better from there.

2. Create for Joy, Not Money

My YouTube earnings? About $150 per month. But that’s not why I create. I share content because:

  • I enjoy helping others
  • I want to make a difference
  • Sharing knowledge brings personal satisfaction

The Unpredictable Magic of Content Creation

Remember, your content might reach people you never expected. The digital universe is wonderfully unpredictable. Some videos will unexpectedly take off, while others might not—and that’s okay.

Forget about viral content. The real success is in consistently creating content you’re passionate about.

In a nutshell

  1. If you wait until you’re perfect before posting your first video, you’ll never post one at all.
  2. Sometimes, your audience isn’t who you expect it to be.
  3. Life is too short to spend time on activities you don’t find fulfilling.
  4. Figuring out the “algorithm” is a moving target. Create value for those who appreciate it.
  5. What matters most is that you’re putting something positive into the world that wasn’t there before.
