Acing the test is the ultimate goal. It doesn’t matter how regularly you attend class, how focused you are during lectures, or how detailed your notes are. If the material isn’t locked in your head when test papers are passed out, you’re in trouble.

I’m going to show you how to use AI tools you already have access to, specifically ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, to transform your existing course materials into powerful AI study guides that will help you ace your tests.

The Study Material Challenge

As you prepare for tests, you’re juggling lecture notes, PDFs from your professor, and slide decks shared with you. The question is significant: How can you organize all this material into an effective study guide without spending hours on preparation instead of actual studying?

Today, I’ll give you one concrete example: taking a PowerPoint presentation and creating a question-and-answer study guide that functions like digital flashcards – all in just a few minutes.

Your Digital Home Base

First, you need a reliable note-taking app. I use Evernote, but the key is having one readily accessible place to store your materials and serve as your single source of truth when test time arrives.

If you are looking for a notetaking app, here is a link to the Evernote playlist I have on YouTube.

Step-by-Step: From PowerPoint to AI Study Guides

Let’s walk through a real example. You’re taking Music Appreciation, and your test covers Mozart. Your professor shared a PowerPoint presentation, and you need to turn it into a study guide fast.

Creating Your Source Material

If you’re starting from scratch, open PowerPoint and use Copilot – Microsoft’s AI assistant. When prompted, describe what you want: “Create a presentation about the life of Mozart.”

Copilot generates comprehensive slides automatically. You can edit this presentation just like any other slide deck. Once your professor shares similar material with you, you’re ready for the transformation.

The AI Study Guide Magic

Open ChatGPT and type: “I have a PowerPoint presentation and want to create a study guide from the slide deck. Can you do that for me?”

ChatGPT responds that it can help and asks you to upload your presentation file. It offers to extract key points and organize them into a clear, concise study guide. The AI also asks if you want definitions of key terms, visual references, summaries, or practice questions.

Upload your PowerPoint file, and ChatGPT creates your comprehensive study guide instantly.

Making It Work for Your Study Style

Copy everything from ChatGPT and paste it into a new note in your note-taking app. Don’t settle for a PDF download because you can’t edit those easily later.

But here’s where it gets even better. Ask ChatGPT: “Can you give me this in a question-and-answer format for self-quizzing?”

The AI immediately provides exactly that – questions followed by answers in a quiz-friendly format.

The Ultimate Study Hack

For the most effective self-testing, you could ask ChatGPT to separate questions and answers onto different pages. This way, you can truly quiz yourself without seeing the answers.

But I have an even better idea that leverages your note-taking app’s capabilities.

Ask ChatGPT: “You’ve given me a list of questions and answers. Can you reproduce that list with each question as a level 3 header and the corresponding answer in plain text below?”

Copy this result and paste it into your note-taking app. Each question becomes a collapsible header with the answer underneath in plain text.

In Evernote, you can collapse any header by clicking the arrow beside it. Go through all questions and close the headers. Now you have a clean list of questions.

Look at the first question, try to answer it mentally, then expand that header to check your answer. It’s like having professional flashcards that you created in minutes, not hours.

Multiply Your Impact

If you’re sharing an Evernote notebook with classmates taking the same course, everyone with access can use this study guide. You’re not just helping yourself – you’re creating a resource for your entire study group.

The Modern Student Advantage

Students have been creating study materials since schools existed. But the tools I’ve shown you today are unique to today’s students. We have technology that takes what used to be laborious and time-consuming and accomplishes it in minutes.

You can spend more time actually studying and less time preparing study materials.

Your Next Action Step

Don’t just read this material. Use it. Go back through this process and create something for yourself. Start with any topic that interests you. Create a PowerPoint presentation from notes you already have, or give Copilot a general topic. Work through the entire process to generate your own AI study guides.

Life doesn’t have to be as hard as we sometimes make it. Spending time learning to use these tools saves countless hours later.

The future of studying is here, and it’s powered by AI. The question isn’t whether these tools will change how students learn. It’s whether you’ll be among the first to master them.
